Digital radiography, also known as digital x-rays, have dramatically improved how dentists image patients’ smiles and have revolutionized patient comfort and safety. What are digital x-rays and why are they such a big deal? Do digital x-rays impact your visit to the dentist?
X-ray imaging, or radiography, utilizes x-ray waves to generate an image of an opaque object. An x-ray source projects x-rays, which then pass through the object to be analyzed. Next, a film on the other side of the object receives the remaining x-rays that passed through the object. Some of the x-rays cannot make it through the object, however; some x-rays are blocked and absorbed by denser materials, such as bone tissue. In the past, dentists utilized small films when taking x-rays of a patient’s smile. With digital x-rays, however, have replaced film with a small digital receiver. Consequently, far less radiation is needed per x-ray, improving patient safety and comfort. Digital x-rays are also quickly and conveniently stored onto the computer, making record keeping much smoother.
