Is your flossing technique up to snuff? It’s good to review technique every once in awhile, to make sure your teeth are getting as clean as possible.
When flossing, use a thread that is roughly 18 inches long. This allows you to clean each tooth with a clean section of thread, avoiding cross-contamination of different parts of your mouth. Wrap each end of the strand around a finger on each hand so you can move the thread up and down as necessary, in a gentle sawing motion. Don’t forget to floss behind the back molars!
If your floss shreds when you use it, it’s time to upgrade to a stronger product. Single filament thread is shred resistant, easily available, and should be used if possible. Check for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on any dental cleaning products that you use, such as floss. This seal guarantees that you are purchasing a top-quality product that won’t harm your mouth, if used properly.
If you struggle to properly floss every day using a conventional method, try using an alternative product, such as a water flosser! Water flossers are interdental cleaners that easily clean your mouth by shooting beams of water to wash debris away. Check with Drs. Timothy Collier for other flossing alternatives.
